 Jakob Smits

Jakob Smits is one of the greatest Flemish painters. Born in Rotterdam in 1855, he settled at Mol-Achterbos in 1888 and died there in 1928. During these 40 years he created a series of paintings, drawings and etchings. Smits’ Campinian landscapes and interiors, portraits and biblical scenes show that he was constantly in search of the human soul and of the deeper meaning of things.

The Jakob Smitsmuseum was opened in 1977 and extended in 1996. It is situated in the old rectory at Mol-Sluis, a 19th century house in which the master’s work is perfectly at home.
