The new book "Zacht in ruwheid" (Soft in roughness) focuses on the life and work of Jakob Smits

Soft in roughness, meeting  Jakob Smits is a richly illustrated introduction to his life and work.  The artist (1855-1928) spent most of his life in Mol-Achterbos. The book contains a well-stocked biographical overview  and is lavishly illustrated with reproductions of his work.

The publication is intended as an introduction and reference work for visitors to the Jakob Smits Museum. It replaces Painter of Light from 2011as new findings continually broaden the view of the painter and his timeless work.

The Author Willy Thijs has been associated with the museum for many decades. As editor-in-chief of the museums magazine, he is thoroughly familiar with the painter and his work.
