  • The young Jakob (1855 - 1879)

Jakob Smits was born as the son of a decorative painter. He was creative, and it seemed destined that he would take over his father's company. However, Jakob had other plans.

  • Studies abroad (1879 - 1881)

Jakob struggled to find his path as a decorator. He decided to leave his fiancée behind in order to pursue his passion for art and further develop his skills.

  • Search for identity (1881 - 1888)

Jakob married for the first time and was confronted with great doubts. Family life and its responsibilities were difficult for him.

  • Love and Poverty (1888 - 1899)

Jakob had his heydays of love. He met the woman of his life. Financially, however, these were hard times.

  • Hope for improvement (1899 - 1914)

Jakob was devastated after Malvina's death. He was left with three young children and limited financial means. He later met Josine, his third wife, who took care of his business interests and helped bring about a financial revival.

  • The war years (1914 - 1918)

During the First World War, Jakob Smits largely ceased his artistic activities and devoted himself primarily to social work.

  • His last years (1918 - 1928)

Jakob was plagued by health problems in the years leading up to his death, but from an artistic perspective they were the most fruitful years of his life.
